Market update

From January 2024, remote identification (RID) will be mandatory for drone pilots in the EU.

The main goal of implementing RID is to improve the safety of unmanned aerial systems by increasing transparency in the airspace. To this end, RID technologies enable authorities and the public to identify drones remotely using smartphones or dedicated receivers and transmit data such as serial numbers, operator registration, pilot position, take-off point and location.

What does this mean for drone flights in the special or open category?

  • Special category: Compliance can be achieved either by operating a C-class drone with integrated RID (C1, C2, C3, C5, C6) or by retrofitting older drone models with an attached RID module.
  • Open category: Drones in classes C0 to C4 must use a label with identification details. Drones without RID that were purchased before December 31, 2023 can be operated without them in the open category.

In 2023, Droniq had already laid the foundations to respond to the forthcoming EU regulation. The centerpiece is our partnership with the Czech company Dronetag. The Dronetag mini is a transponder or remote identification device that can be attached to almost any drone due to its low weight.

A tip: All drones in the Enterprise series from the manufacturer DJI already have RID installed!
