Waldsassen Monastery Church

Creation of a precise 3D model by manual drone flight with the DJI Mavic 3 Pro.

The restoration of the Waldsassen monastery church presented an extraordinary challenge: In order to create a precise 3D model of the church, it was necessary to fly over the interior. As this could only be carried out manually, experienced drone pilots were required who could navigate safely even in complex environments.

The goal

The aim of the project was to use drone images to create a detailed basis for the creation of a high-precision 3D model of the monastery church. This model is used for documentation, supports the restoration and helps to safeguard the cultural heritage in the long term.

The implementation

To achieve the goal, the monastery church was first flown manually with a drone. This challenging task was carried out by an experienced pilot who was able to navigate the drone safely through the complex interior. A total of around 2,000 high-resolution images were taken with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro. These images were processed together with a further 8,000 images and laser scans from illustrated architecture to create a realistic and highly detailed 3D model.

The model was developed as part of the Bayern 3D - Heimat digital project. It was initiated and financed by Prof. Dr. G. Hirzinger, the former director of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics.

Our contribution

Our contribution to this unique project was the manual aerial survey of the Waldsassen monastery church with the DJI Mavic 3 Pro. Thanks to our many years of experience and the powerful drone, we were able to create the basis for a high-precision 3D model that provides lasting support for the restoration and documentation of this historic building.

The finished 3D model can be viewed here.
