White giant of the city of Duisburg

Airspace surveillance and drone detection for maximum security.

When the "Weißer Riese" tower block was blown up in Duisburg in July, safety was the top priority. Not only on the ground, but also in the air. It was important to ensure that the drones used for reconnaissance and documentation could fly safely and without interference from unauthorized drones at all times.

The goal

The aim was to enable the safe use of drones - both for documenting the blasting and for reconnaissance of the blasting area. To this end, it had to be ensured that the drone pilots commissioned by the City of Duisburg could see their own drone and the unmanned aircraft of the other drone pilots at all times. In addition, no unauthorized drone was allowed to fly in the blasting area.

The implementation

As one of the companies involved, Droniq used the DJI Matrice M400 for the documentation and reconnaissance work. To achieve the best possible recording results, the drone was equipped with the H30T, among other things. In addition, the DJI Zenmuse L1 loudspeaker with up to 130 decibels was used so that the security forces deployed during the demolition could make large-scale announcements if necessary.

To ensure safe air traffic in the airspace close to the ground, Droniq provided the drone pilots with its "TraX" live air situation. This shows the surrounding air traffic in real time. An integrated warning system also uses visual and acoustic signals to inform pilots of approaching air traffic so that they can take evasive action in good time if necessary.

At the same time, Droniq also used the warning system to inform the authorities about unauthorized drone flights. For this purpose, drones that do not transmit a remote ID also had to be detected. To fulfill this requirement, Droniq coupled the TraX air situation with its drone detection system.

Our contribution

By providing the TraX software, Droniq ensured safe air traffic for everyone involved before and during the demolition. At the same time, the live air situation and drone detection system enabled unauthorized drone operations to be quickly identified and reported to the relevant regulatory authorities. In addition, the DJI M400 used by Droniq contributed to the smooth running of the documentation and reconnaissance flights with its equipment.

How Droniq monitors the air and accompanies the demolition

On site in Duisburg, our colleague Jan explains the central role drone use played in the blast - and how Droniq's drone detection system helped to keep the airspace safe and free of unauthorized drone flights.
