Press release: Droniq supports civil protection of the city of Leonberg in setting up a drone unit

Civil protection of the city of Leonberg sets up drone unit

Frankfurt, 26.08.2024 - The civil protection department of the city of Leonberg is planning to set up a drone unit in 2025. In future, this unit will use drones to assist in the search for missing persons, situation reconnaissance and reconnaissance or the inspection of fire scenes, among other things. The unit is a directorate of the Department of Fire and Civil Protection. It is staffed by the emergency services of the volunteer fire department.

The civil protection department responsible for this is working closely with Droniq to set up the drone unit. In addition to high-performance industrial drones equipped with a high-resolution thermal camera, the team led by head of unit Ralf Kotte is also acquiring all the equipment needed to make the drones visible in the airspace in order to safeguard their use as effectively as possible. In order to extend the drone's radio signal and thus its operational range and protect it from possible signal interruptions, the drones are controlled via the LTE network and a private Droniq server in addition to the normal 2.4/5.8 GHz radio signal.

"We decided to work with Droniq because we are convinced by the merger of Deutsche Flugsicherung and Deutsche Telekom. This allows us to safely integrate our drones into the airspace," says Ralf Kotte. The city of Leonberg sees Droniq as a reliable and high-quality partner.

However, the end of the line has not yet been reached for civil protection. In order to bundle the drone activities in the best possible way, they are to be connected via livestream to the command vehicle and the storage room of the municipal administration staff for extraordinary events. In addition, an equipment cart will be set up as a mobile ground control station for the drone unit, to which the drone's livestream will be transmitted via a powerful radio link. It is also possible to distribute images to the vehicles involved in the operation and transmit them via LTE. The situation in the air is monitored in the equipment vehicle via the Droniq air situation (TraX). Here too, Droniq will provide support during the introduction.

"We are very pleased to be able to use our expertise in the use of drones by authorities and organizations with security tasks and also our technology to help the city of Leonberg's civil protection to take its drone unit into the air from 2025," says Droniq CEO Jan-Eric Putze.

About Droniq GmbH

Droniq GmbH is a joint venture founded in 2019 by DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung (51% share) and Deutsche Telekom (49% share). Based in Frankfurt am Main, the company's mission is to promote the professional and safe use of drones by public authorities and organizations with security tasks, as well as by companies.

The core of Droniq's product offering is the Droniq Traffic Management System for Drones (UTM). The UTM shows the pilot all surrounding air traffic - manned and unmanned. Furthermore, the other air traffic participants can also see the drone if necessary. With this system, which is unique in Germany, Droniq creates the basis for using drones safely beyond visual range.

Other services offered by Droniq include the sale of drones for commercial and government drone use, as well as hardware and software solutions for safe operation. It also supports its customers in applying for operating permits and advises on mission planning. With its Droniq Academy, which has offices in Frankfurt and Mönchengladbach, among other cities, the company also offers training and exams for remote pilots. Droniq's customers include federal and state police units as well as fire departments, rescue forces and companies from the chemical, logistics, construction and security sectors.
