Frankfurt am Main Transport Company (VGF)

Efficient inspection and 3D measurement from the air

Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) operates one of the largest local transport networks in Hesse. Regular maintenance and inspection of the infrastructure, especially the overhead contact line systems, is time-consuming and labor-intensive. In order to increase efficiency and make targeted use of resources, VGF has commissioned Droniq GmbH to support it in expanding its drone activities.

More precise and safer inspections

The goal

VGF wanted to optimize its maintenance and inspection processes in order to reduce the time required, increase work safety and improve the efficiency of maintenance. At the same time, drones were to be used for 3D surveying and other applications.

The implementation

Together with Droniq, VGF has driven forward the structured expansion of its use of drones. This included:

  • Procurement of new drones
  • Training for drone pilots
  • Acquisition of the operating license
  • Implementation of efficient workflows for inspection and measurement.

Our contribution

Droniq supported VGF with comprehensive expertise in the implementation of drone technology. A key milestone was the successful application for an operating license in accordance with the current EU Drone Regulation, which enables VGF to use drones in compliance with the law. To this end, Droniq carried out a detailed risk assessment for VGF's above-ground rail network - an area of around 280 kilometers in length.

In addition to providing licensing advice, Droniq has also supported VGF in training its drone pilots, with further training - such as special 3D surveying training - to follow. In addition, Droniq has equipped VGF with modern drone equipment that meets the specific requirements of infrastructure maintenance.

With this support, VGF can plan and carry out its drone missions efficiently. The technology enables more precise inspections, reduces personnel costs and increases safety for employees by replacing risky manual work with the use of drones.

Easier & faster entry into regular operation with the LUC

The "Light UAS Operator Certificate" (LUC) is a certificate valid throughout Europe for organizations that use drones in this special category. It allows more autonomy, for example in the approval of flying areas - without additional official procedures. This saves time & creates operational flexibility.

In our DRONIQlive webinar, experts from the LBA, Droniq & from the field will explain for whom the LUC is worthwhile and how it facilitates regular operations. We look forward to your participation on 29.04.2025 at 7 pm!
