Systematically Building Drone Expertise in Disaster Response

Drones are playing an increasingly important role in the security industry. Telekom Security is also increasingly relying on modern drone technology in the field of disaster response to efficiently support emergency responders in assessing the situation and coordinating operations.

As part of a multi-stage training program, the teams received targeted preparation for the professional use of drones—from the theoretical fundamentals to practical application in realistic scenarios.

The goal

The goal of the drone training was to prepare Telekom Security’s response teams for the safe and efficient use of drones in security-critical situations. As part of the collaboration, a total of approximately 60 participants were trained at several locations in Germany—including Leipzig, Glashütten, Bremen, and Göppingen. The goal was to build a scalable level of expertise and specifically equip the teams for use in disaster response. In addition to regulatory fundamentals, the training focused in particular on flight planning, the safe execution of missions, and the application of drone technology in realistic scenarios. Participants were trained to use drones specifically for reconnaissance, situation assessment, and mission coordination, thereby supporting well-informed decision-making during operations.

The implementation

The program began with a three-day training course at the Kulmbach site, where theoretical content and practical flight training were closely integrated. An introduction to regulatory requirements was followed by hands-on training with drones such as the DJI M30T and M3T. The program concluded with the successful completion of the A2 remote pilot certificate exam.

Building on this concept, the training program was expanded: Additional emergency responders were trained in further drone training courses held at several locations in Germany. As a result, the training evolved from a one-off course into a scalable training approach.

Our contribution

Droniq supported Telekom Security with a customized training program specifically tailored to the requirements of disaster response. The training combined theory and practice in three core modules:

  1. Theory Training:
Coverage of all regulatory requirements for the safe operation of drones, as well as targeted preparation for the A2 remote pilot license exam.
  2. Hands-on training:
Training with various types of drones, such as the DJI M30T and M3T. The focus was on flight skills, safe handling, and preparation for specific operational scenarios under realistic conditions.
  3. Operational Applications:
Exploring practical applications in greater depth, particularly in disaster response. These include, among other things, situational assessment, search and rescue, and the use of specialized sensors such as thermal cameras.
