Fawn rescue at Bremen Airport

Fawn rescue at Bremen Airport

Rescue of wild animals by drone

The Kladding meadows, where we were out and about this week, lie to the south of Bremen Airport. Our aim was to use a drone to identify smaller animals such as deer, hares and ground-nesting birds in order to save them from imminent mowing.

Challenge: overcoming security zones at the airport

A project that is particularly challenging around the airport. This is because the Kladding meadows extend into the airport's security area. Drones usually have no business in this area. Spontaneous drone use in such an area is unthinkable and, in the worst case, could result in a fine for the drone pilot. Accordingly, a solution was needed here to make drone use possible.

Flight preparation and coordination of drone deployment

The first step was to obtain approval from DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung for the use of drones in the safety zone, thus laying the legal foundations for us to be allowed to fly here at all. During the drone flights, we worked closely with the Bremen air traffic controllers, whom we would like to take this opportunity to thank. Our flights were precisely staggered with a view to the arriving and departing airliners, which meant that there was no overlap between manned and unmanned traffic. Additional security was provided by the use of our UTM to keep an eye on all air traffic activities at all times.

Result of the drone mission

We are proud to announce the successful rescue of 4 fawns. And a lot of happy faces to boot!
