BMDV Concept: Establishment of U-Spaces in Germany

Our CEO Jan-Eric Putze with a comment on the U-Space concept published last week by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV):

💬 "With the published U-Space concept, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs is taking the next, correct and important step with regard to the future of the drone market. The U-Space concept of the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency definitely has the potential to promote the use of drones as a vehicle in urban regions. The industry is already in the starting blocks with corresponding solutions. It is therefore all the more important that the concept initiates the next step in the establishment of U-Spaces.

However, there is still work to be done in the future implementation of U-Spaces. The concept still leaves a few unanswered questions, especially with regard to the drone user. For example, how does U-Space deal with the costs incurred for a flight? Who will develop the technical infrastructure needed for U-Space? And above all, when can industry expect to see the first U-Spaces in Germany? These and other questions must be answered as quickly as possible with a view to the further development of the drone market.

After the U-Space concept is before the U-Space ordinance, which is now to take place next. I am curious to see how this will define some of the points mentioned in the concept. Among these is the newly created position of U-Space Coordinator, who will be responsible for evaluating whether or not a U-Space can be built. This position could make a decisive contribution to promoting the establishment of U-Spaces in Germany - assuming a lean structure and fast and clear coordination and decision-making channels.

It remains exciting, we will definitely be there!"
