Development launch of the digital platform for rescue flight

Frankfurt, 02.11.2023 - When the rescue helicopter takes off, drones have to take evasive action in good time. In practice, this is sometimes difficult. The helicopters are not always visible, their flight paths unknown. A safety problem for both sides. To solve the problem, Droniq, the non-profit ADAC Luftrettung and rescuetrack are building Germany's first digital platform for making rescue flights visible by next year.

"We experience time and again that private, commercial or official drones approach our rescue helicopters unintentionally," explains Dr. Philip Edelmann, pilot and Flight Operations Officer at ADAC Luftrettung. "We are therefore all the more looking forward to solving this challenge with our platform."

The platform is based on Droniq's traffic management system (UTM). This displays active rescue missions in real time - including the planned route segment. The information for this is transmitted by rescuetrack. The Reutlingen-based company is the industry leader in integrated solutions for rescue services, police and fire departments. The main functions, which are used daily by more than 2,000 customers as software as a service, include vehicle hardware for the exchange of mission data, status transmission, positioning, navigation and connection of third-party applications.

Drone pilots who are in the planned route section with their drone are warned in good time via the Droniq UTM. This enables them to take evasive action or make an intermediate landing in good time. At the same time, a virtual safety corridor is set up around the planned route of the rescue helicopters in the UTM and displayed to the users. They can take the planned rescue route into account accordingly in their flights. In addition, the information on drone traffic can be passed on to rescuetrack via the UTM and thus made available to the rescue units as needed.

"With the current project, the DFS subsidiary Droniq further strengthens its position as a leading specialist for official drone use" says DFS CEO Arndt Schoenemann. "Furthermore, the platform marks the missing building block for Droniq to truly make all air traffic participants visible in ground-based airspace in the future."

The go-ahead for the construction of the digital rescue flight platform was given at the beginning of October. Completion is planned for spring 2024.
