Greater safety in the field thanks to an integrated air situation picture

The Local Incident Command Support Group (UG-ÖEL) of the Weilheim-Schongau Civil Protection Agency assists incident commanders in managing major emergency situations. Its responsibilities include creating and updating situational maps, documenting operations, and coordinating communication and command processes.

By integrating the Droniq air situation overview into edp:map, the unit is creating greater transparency in airspace and improving the coordination of drones, rescue helicopters, and other aircraft.

The goal

Since launching its drone unit in 2024, the UG-ÖEL Weilheim-Schongau has been regularly using drones in searches for missing persons, searches for individuals, the documentation of severe weather conditions, and the detection of smoldering embers during fires.

As the number of drones, police helicopters, and emergency response helicopters in operation has increased, so too has the importance of safe airspace coordination. Until now, coordination has primarily relied on direct communication, while private aircraft also had to be monitored using external applications.

The goal was therefore to integrate all relevant air situation information directly into the existing incident command system and to create a centralized air situation picture that is available at all times. The focus was on improving operational safety, enhancing coordination between air and ground response teams, and reducing the workload on drone teams and incident command staff.

The implementation

To create a centralized air situation picture for drones and manned aircraft, the UG-ÖEL Weilheim-Schongau decided to integrate the Droniq air situation system into its existing operational command software, edp:map. In addition, a DroneConnect Ground Antenna was purchased to provide visibility of additional drones in the operational area.

After receiving approval from the district administration office, the drone team took charge of the implementation and training on its own. It took about six months from the time the application was submitted until the system went live. Today, relevant air traffic is displayed directly on the map and can be filtered to provide data tailored to each specific operation.

Our contribution

Droniq supported the UG-ÖEL Weilheim-Schongau in implementing an integrated air situation picture for operational use.

These include:

  • Droniq Air Situation Interface for edp:map, designed for the direct integration of the air situation into operational command and control, including the integration of real-time air situation data directly into the situational map
  • HOD4track for electronically visualizing your own drone
  • Integration with DroneConnect Ground to display additional drones in the operational area

By consolidating all information into a single, centralized application, the UG-ÖEL can now coordinate air and ground response teams more efficiently and further enhance safety in complex emergency situations.

How Droniq monitors the air and accompanies the demolition

On site in Duisburg, our colleague Jan explains the central role drone use played in the blast - and how Droniq's drone detection system helped to keep the airspace safe and free of unauthorized drone flights.
