How Ursa-Chemie is rethinking transportation with Droniq and Telekom
The two Ursa-Chemie GmbH sites in Montabaur, Rhineland-Palatinate, are only around 700 meters apart as the crow flies. Despite this, laboratory samples still had to be transported by car several times a day - a time-consuming and costly process. Together with Droniq and Deutsche Telekom, the company has now found a forward-looking solution: transportation by drone.
Initial situation: Regular laboratory sample runs by car
As a manufacturer of specialty chemical products, Ursa-Chemie operates two factory sites where samples are regularly analyzed for quality assurance purposes. The samples were previously transported conventionally - by car. In order to make these internal processes more efficient and save resources, the company decided to examine the possibilities of drone technology.
The start of the project: from idea to implementation
"It was a shot in the dark, but the contacts at Deutsche Telekom were immediately very motivated to implement this project," reports Ursa-Chemie. Contact with Droniq, the joint venture between Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS), was established via Telekom, the medium-sized company's long-standing IT and communications partner.
Together, the partners developed a concept for the drone transportation of laboratory samples that is optimally tailored to Ursa-Chemie's requirements.
The goal: smarter, faster and more sustainable transportation
The aim of the project is to make transportation between the two sites easier, faster and more environmentally friendly. The use of a transport drone eliminates the need for daily car journeys - saving time, cutting costs and reducing CO₂ emissions. At the same time, employees are relieved of routine tasks and can concentrate more on their core tasks.
Implementation: drone, approval and training from a single source
For the transport comes a DJI Matrice M350 is used to transport the samples in a specially secured container. It flies in an approved corridor between the two sites and can be launched at the touch of a button. The flight is monitored by two employees who are on hand at the start and finish points to intervene if necessary.
Droniq took on essential tasks:
Delivery of the DJI M350 drone
Creation of the operating concept (ConOps) including risk analysis (SORA)
Training of four A2 remote pilots on site at Ursa-Chemie
Provision of the Air situation monitoring via TraXPro
Thanks to this comprehensive support, drone operations were approved and successfully launched at the beginning of 2025.
Conclusion: An example of industrial innovation in action
The project shows how digital technologies, telecommunications and aviation can go hand in hand. With drone transportation, Ursa-Chemie is setting an example for innovation and sustainability in everyday industrial life - and Droniq is providing the appropriate expertise, technology and approval competence.
