Why safety in airspace is only possible through visibility
Our CEO Jan Eric Putze explains today why safety in airspace is only possible through visibility - and why Germany must take action:
Germany should know at all times which air traffic (whether manned or unmanned) is in German airspace - regardless of altitude!
We need a functioning drone detection and defense system in Germany!
Against the backdrop of the recent, highly alarming drone sightings, our political representatives have recognized this fact. That is an important sign!
But when I read what is being demanded, it makes me angry!
Because once again we want to reinvent the wheel instead of consistently using and further developing existing drone defense systems!
WHAT IS TO BE DONE?
Regulated drone traffic and drone detection and defense must always be considered together. This is the only way to DISTINGUISH between cooperative and non-cooperative airspace users!
- We must establish the visibility of ALL airspace users in order to gain sovereignty over the airspace!
- Let me add: Drone detection systems that also display uncooperative drones? THERE ARE already!
- We need to be able to DISTINGUISH between cooperative and non-cooperative participants in the airspace. The technology for this already exists!
The prerequisites for nationwide drone detection and defense are therefore in place - they just need to be used NETWORKED! And the official responsibilities must be CLEARLY assigned!
It is worth taking a look at some of our neighboring countries. They are not constantly coming up with new concepts - instead, existing technologies are being implemented DIRECTLY to solve the problem of drone detection and defense:
- Sweden has introduced a COUNTRYWIDE UTM within a very short time.
- Within a year, Belgium has introduced its own COUNTRYWIDE DRONE DETECTION SYSTEM for use by the authorities.
- Switzerland plans to make it mandatory for all air traffic participants to make themselves digitally VISIBLE.
AND GERMANY?
We are talking about new concepts, even though the concepts already exist!
EASA has already adopted the regulation for the introduction of U-Space in 2023. Visibility and safety are clearly defined within U-Space, as are concepts for drone detection and defense. In order to use this concept in Germany, we simply need to transpose the EASA regulation into German law. However, the German government is currently only planning to introduce U-Spaces in isolated cases and not across the board.
Let's make all air traffic participants visible NOW by introducing U-Space across the board in Germany! We cannot afford blind spots when it comes to securing our airspace.
