How does a state-of-the-art drone perform in one of the harshest environments on Earth?
This was the question FH Joanneum asked itself when it set off on an expedition to the Arctic with a DJI Matrice 4T. The goal: to collect scientific data under extreme weather conditions—using technology that can confidently handle sub-zero temperatures and gusts of wind.
Test flights in Austria
Before the Arctic expedition began, the DJI Matrice 4T was extensively tested in Austria. The team conducted numerous test flights, which allowed them to gain initial experience in operating the drone. Various functions were run through, camera settings were tested, missions were planned, and deployment scenarios were simulated.

The DJI Matrice 4T is a true all-rounder for demanding missions.
It combines state-of-the-art sensor technology with high reliability—even under extreme conditions. Its integrated camera system includes a wide-angle, zoom, and thermal camera, as well as a laser rangefinder module that measures distances with precision.

The actual mission then began in Greenland. In freezing temperatures and sometimes stormy winds, the drone was used in several use cases, including:

- for the creation of image and video material for scientific documentation.
