Training: Become an
expert with Droniq

Both private and commercial remote pilots of drones with a take-off mass of more than 2 kg require a proof of knowledge, effectively a drone licence (Drohnenführerschein). A proof of knowledge is also required in order to apply to the competent aviation authority of the German Federal State for exemptions from otherwise prohibited operations. In addition, with the proof of knowledge you can obtain permission to fly drones with a take-off mass of more than 5 kg and are able to use a general ruling (Allgemeinverfügungen).

The drone licence is valid for five years. The licence is to ensure that remote pilots can operate their drones safely and responsibly. If you pass the exam, you can use your drone at all times, both privately and commercially. If you possess a pilot's licence for manned aircraft, you do not need this proof of knowledge.

Droniq offers the following courses and exams:

Online training for the proof of knowledge (drone licence)

Online training for the proof of knowledge according to §21d German Aviation Regulation (LuftVO)

Learning independent of time and place and at your own pace - these are the advantages of online-based training. Our online training covers the following theoretical subjects: air law, meteorology, flight operations and navigation. The training materials were developed together with experienced pilots and flight instructors on the basis of the guidelines from the German Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt, LBA).

The course lasts about eight to ten hours and is usually completed in one to two weeks, depending on previous knowledge. Tests of the learning objectives at the end of units/chapters show learners possible gaps in their knowledge so they can review specific content again. At the end of an online training course, learners can test their acquired knowledge again across all learning areas. This is the ideal way to prepare for the proof-of-knowledge exam in a way that allows learners to allocate their time as they wish.

Classroom training for the proof of knowledge (drone licence)

Classroom training for the proof of knowledge according to §21d German Aviation Regulation (LuftVO)

The classroom training includes – as does Droniq's online training – the theoretical preparation for the proof-of-knowledge exam according to §21d German Aviation Regulation (LuftVO). The classroom training is aimed at companies, authorities and organisations that want to prepare their operators for existing, or future, application scenarios. The classroom training is conducted by experienced pilots, flight instructors and certified trainers. Classroom training ensures the targeted transfer of knowledge together with other participants in a professional learning environment with the most modern media. On request, we can customise our training contents for company training courses and adapt to specific needs.

On-site exam for the proof of knowledge (drone licence)

On-site exam for the proof of knowledge according to §21d German Aviation Regulation (LuftVO)

If you are already knowledgeable about drone operations and would like to prove your knowledge, you can acquire the drone licence / proof of knowledge according to §21d German Aviation Regulation (LuftVO) in an on-site exam. This is also of use if drones are being used commercially.

You can obtain your proof of knowledge (drone licence) from a test centre certified by the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA), such as Droniq (DE.AST.086). A written exam is required. This exam requires that you attend personally, i.e. you must be present on-site at the test centre. The exam lasts a maximum of 120 minutes. There is a short topic refresher before the exam.

Requirements for the proof of knowledge

  • Minimum age: 16 years (If you are under age, the written permission of the legal guardian is required.)
  • A valid identity card (passport)
  • A declaration about whether you are the subject of ongoing investigative or criminal proceedings (Erklärung über laufende Ermittlungs- und Strafverfahren)
  • A certificate of good conduct, or police record, (Führungszeugnis) as specified in Section 30(1) of the German Federal Central Criminal Register Act (BZRG)
The exam consists of 51 questions, which are randomly drawn from a pool of 255 potential questions. The following subjects are covered:
Air law

Air law

At least 23 questions on air law (such as legal basics, permissions to conduct missions, airspace structure, air traffic control, incident and accident reporting, marking of aircraft, liability, copyright, data protection, etc.)

Meteorology

Meteorology

At least 6 questions on meteorology (such as minimum weather conditions in airspaces, special weather conditions (precipitation, fog, thunderstorms, thermals), operational limits (wind, temperature), local and current conditions, etc.)

Flight operations and navigation

Flight operations and navigation

At least 22 questions on flight operations and navigation (such as flight preparation, risk assessment, checklists, requesting clearances, estimating altitude and distance, flight aerodynamics, assessment of external conditions, etc.)

To pass the exam, you must correctly answer at least 75% of the questions from each subject area. If you do not pass, you can repeat the exam free of charge. You get your results directly after the exam and if you pass you will immediately receive your drone licence.

Our online and classroom courses will prepare you optimally for the exam.
